Coxswain Grade I Near Coastal may secure employment on the following vessels under 12 m in length
 

This includes:
 

• Commercial fishing vessels

• Charter fishing boats

• Police or other government boats

• Passenger charter yachts

• Water Taxis and more...
   

You will learn:

• Practical skills in coastal navigation and seamanship using a range of vessels.

• Practical firefighting and survival skills required for safety at sea.

• Practical mechanic and engineering skills for boats.

• Health, safety and environmental work pactices aboard a vessel.
   

  Requirements for the issue of the final AMSA Certificate of Competency (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal):
 

• MAR20321 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) (provided at the successful completion of the course);

• Successfully pass the AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment – AMPA (included as part of the course for an additional fee).

• ​The AMPA assessment is only valid for 12 months, therefore you must apply to AMSA for the COC within 12 months of course completion.

• HLTAID011 statement of attainment Provide first aid;

• Long Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency; (LROCP)

• Certificate of medical fitness - domestic seafarers (completed on AMSA1850 form)

• 16 years old.
   

Sea Service
 

You need to show you have experience working at sea in a deck, or a deck and engineering capacity, on vessels at least five metres long.

You can reduce the amount of sea service you need by completing an AMSA task book.

You must have completed either:

• 30 days on commercial vessels with a completed AMSA task book

• 150 days on commercial or recreational vessels without an AMSA task book.

 

Possible Restrictions – COXSWAIN GRADE 1 NEAR COASTAL
 

• Restricted to daylight hours:
  A certificate will be restricted to daylight hours if the person is colour vision deficient.

Prior Training and Experience
 

Contact us to arrange a telephone interview to assess your prior training and experience as you may be eligible for Credit Transfer and/or Recognition of Prior Learning. If you wish to proceed with the process of recognition of prior learning, you will be required to present the required documentation for review. There will be an administration fee for assessing your documentation and you may have a practical skills and knowledge assessment at an additional cost. The main features of the Coxswain Near Coastal training Course

There are a total of 13 units of competency for MAR20321 - Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal).
 

When you have successfully completed the 13 units of competency, completed the AMPA, met the requirements and accrued the sea service you will be eligible to lodge your Certificate of Competency application to AMSA for the Coxswain Grade 1 NC COC.
