Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal

The MAR30921 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24m Near Coastal) (Master Class 5) training program will enable you to apply for an AMSA Master less than 24m Near Coastal (NC) Certificate of Competency that will allow you to work as crew or a Captain on Australian Registered commercial vessels less than 24m long, operating in the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Australia has changed from state-based certification to National Certification. The previous certifications Master Class 5, Skipper Grade 3, Master Class V (Trading), Master Class V (Fishing) and Master Class 5 (Trading and Fishing) now all come under the qualification of Master less than 24m Near Coastal in the national system.

Every commercial vessel licensed to operate in Australian waters needs the ‘skipper’ or person in charge to hold a Certificate of Competency issued by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

The Master up to 24 m NC course at Superyacht Crew Academy provides the required theory and practical training to complete all the units for the Maritime Training Package MAR30921 - Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal).

Requirements for the issue of a (Master Up to 24m Near Coastal) Certificate of Competency:

  • MAR30921 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 Metres Near Coastal) (provided at the successful completion of the course).
  • Successfully pass the AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment – AMPA (included as part of the course for an additional fee).
  • HLTAID011 statement of attainment Provide first aid
  • Long Range Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency.(LROCP)
  • Certificate of medical fitness - domestic seafarers (completed on AMSA1850 form)
  • 16 years old.

Sea Service

You need to show you have experience working at sea in a deck, or deck and engineering capacity. You can reduce the amount of sea service you need by completing an AMSA task book. With a completed AMSA task book you will need:

  • 120 days of sea service
  • On commercial vessels at least 7.5 metres long

Without an AMSA task book you will need:

  • 360 days of sea service on vessels at least 7.5 metres long
  • At least half on commercial vessels
  • Up to half on recreational vessels

WHAT WILL THE MASTER UP TO 24M NEAR COASTAL - CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY ALLOW YOU TO DO?

  • Master on commercial vessels up to 24 metres long within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
  • Chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels up to 45 metres long within the EEZ
  • Chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels up to 100 metres long in inshore waters.

Possible Restrictions - MASTER UP TO 24M NEAR COASTAL

  • Restricted to daylight hours:
    A certificate will be restricted to daylight hours if the person is colour vision deficient.

PRE-ENROLMENT Requirements

Candidates are expected to have a certain level of skills and knowledge prior to enrolling in this course. Candidates are subject to an initial skills assessment upon course commencement and criteria for enrolment is either:

  • Hold a Coxswain Grade 1 NC COC, or
  • Accrued 80% of the sea service required, or
  • Hold IYT Master of Yachts Limited or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or
  • References/Employer can verify your skill set, experience levels & ability to complete this course via phone interview with trainer

Prior Training and Experience

Contact us to arrange a telephone interview to assess your prior training and experience. If you wish to proceed with the process of recognition of prior learning, you will be required to present the required documentation for review. There will be an administration fee for assessing your documentation and you may have a practical skills and knowledge assessment at an additional cost. The main features of the Master up to 24m Near Coastal - (Master Class 5) training Course

There are a total of 15 units of competency required for the issue of a Certificate III in Maritime Operations. Candidates who have already completed the current shipboard safety skill set are eligible for credit transfer or candidates who hold a valid STCW95 qualification may be eligible for recognition of prior learning. Candidates who have either completed the SSSS units already or have a valid STCW95 qualification will be exempt from Week 1 via credit transfer or recognition of prior learning.

The course also requires you to spend time prior and during the course studying the texts and provided reading. When you have successfully completed the 15 units of competency, completed the AMPA, met the requirements and accrued the sea service you will be eligible to lodge your Certificate of Competency application to AMSA for the Master <24m NC COC.

Course Duration

The Course is 30 Days (5.5 weeks) Full Time or 22 Days (4 weeks) Full Time if you are eligible for credit transfer or recognition of prior learning.

  • Week 1: Monday - Saturday
  • Week 2: Monday - Friday
  • Week 3: Monday - Saturday
  • Week 4: Monday - Friday
  • Shipboard Safety Skill Set & First Aid units: Mon-Sat & Mon-Tue (8 days). Credit transfer or recognition of learning may apply for this component.

Students who have already completed the Shipboard Safety skill set or First Aid will be given credit transfer for the following units. Students who have completed an STCW95 course will be given recognition of prior learning for the following units, excluding first aid.
