Overview
of the MED 3 Course
The Australian MAR20424 – Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) qualification will enable you to work in the following capacity:
-
Chief engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power up to 500 kilowatts within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
-
Chief engineer on a vessel with an outboard engine of unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ
-
Second engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power up to 750 kilowatts within the EEZ
-
As an assistant under the general supervision of the chief engineer within the EEZ
-
In the engine room of a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power up to 3000 kilowatts within the EEZ
Up-Coming Course Dates
Our Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal (MED 3) course runs over 10 days for participants who already hold the Shipboard Safety Skill Set, or 18 days for those who need to complete it as part of the training

Shipboard safety skill set & first aid units - STCW95 Component (if applicable) - 8 days (Can be done first or last)
MED 3
MED 3 Course Dates. ( Course is 10 Days , Mon - Fri ) plus Shipboard Safety Skill Set & first aid if required.
You will learn
The combination theory and practical course incorporates both design, operation and maintenance knowledge of main propulsion and ancillary equipment, auxiliary systems, extra-low voltage electrical systems, work health and safety, marine environmental legislation compliance and sustainability.
Requirements for the Issue of the Final AMSA Certificate of Competency (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal)
Currently, there are no entry requirements set by the AMSA for this particular course, however, we do recommend equivalent proficiency in maths and English to a year 10 level. Each student is required to undertake a prescribed Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LLN).

MAR20424 - Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal) (provided at the successful completion of the course);

Successfully pass the AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment – AMPA (included as part of the course for an additional fee).

The AMPA assessment is only valid for 12 months, therefore you must apply to AMSA for the COC within 12 months of course completion.

HLTAID011 statement of attainment Provide first aid;
-
Certificate of medical fitness - domestic seafarers (completed on AMSA1850 form)

16 years old.
Sea Service
You need to show you have experience working at sea as a general purpose hand (with or without a certificate), as a Coxswain grade 2 or 1 near coastal, or assisting an engineer, while on vessels with at least 75 kilowatts propulsion power.You can reduce the amount of sea service you need by completing an AMSA task book.
With a completed AMSA task book, you will need:

20 days of sea service on commercial vessels

At least half of the sea service on vessels with inboard diesel engines
Without an AMSA task book, you will need:

60 days of sea service on commercial vessels

At least half of the sea service on vessels with inboard diesel engines

Prior Training and Experience
Contact us to arrange a telephone interview to assess your prior training and experience as you may be eligible for Credit Transfer and/or Recognition of Prior Learning. If you wish to proceed with the process of recognition of prior learning, you will be required to present the required documentation for review.

The Main Features of the Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Training Course
You will be completing the following units of competency through theory and practical training while attending the training program at Sydney Maritime Institute.
Training Location
The course is run from our Office in Unit 5a/4 Skyline Place, Frenchs Forest, NSW, 2086, Australia. The facilities are a 25 min drive North of Sydney’s CBD.
