
Overview
of the GPH
The Australian General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate I in Marine Operations qualification will enable you to work as a deckhand on Australian Registered commercial or private vessels.
The General Purpose Hand is the minimum entry level certification required to work on an Australian commercial vessel. A General Purpose Hand assists with deck or engine work on vessels up to 100m long or 3000 GT, in the Australian exclusive economic zone, under general supervision of the master, chief engineer or delegated crew member.
The General Purpose Hand qualification is required by Roads and Maritime Services and National legislation. Without this certification, you may not legally work onboard Australian registered commercial vessels.

Requirements

MAR10224 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) (provided at the successful completion of the course);

Successfully pass the AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment – AMPA (included as part of the course). Not required for AMSA COC application, however still provided.

HLTAID011 statement of attainment Provide first aid
-
Certificate of medical fitness - domestic seafarers (completed on AMSA1850 form)
-
16 years old.
Sea Service
Requirements
5 days of sea service on commercial vessels of any size.
Recording your sea service
Use at least one of the following as proof of qualifying sea service:

the on board sea service record from your task book
-
a letter from the vessel operator, owner, master or chief engineer detailing your sea service
-
an approved sea service log book
Pre-Enrolment
Requirements
Candidates are expected to have a certain level of skills and knowledge prior to enrolling in this course. We do recommend equivalent proficiency in maths and English to a year 10 level. Each student is required to undertake a prescribed Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LLN). Candidates are subject to an initial skills assessment upon course commencement and criteria for enrolment with Sydney Maritime Institute is:

The main features of the General Purpose Hand Near Coastal training Course
There are a total of 8 units of competency for MAR10224 - Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal).
When you have successfully completed the 8 units of competency, completed the AMPA, met the requirements and accrued the sea service you will be eligible to lodge your Certificate of Competency application to AMSA for the General Purpose Hand NC COC.

WEEK 2 & 3 -
On water practical with classroom theory
Course Duration
The course is 17 days (3 weeks) in total and is reflected in the following order

Week 1 & 2: Mon-Sat & Mon-Tue (Shipboard Safety Skill Set & First Aid units)

Week 2 & 3: Wed-Sat & Mon- Fri (General Purpose Hand/Deck units)
Students who have already completed the Shipboard Safety skill set or First Aid will be given credit transfer for the following units. Students who have completed an STCW95 course will be given recognition of prior learning for the following units, excluding first aid. Students will then be exempt from Week 1 & part of Week 2 of the course.

The course is run from our Office in Unit 5a/4 Skyline Place, Frenchs Forest, NSW, 2086, Australia...The facilities are a 25 min drive North of Sydney’s CBD.
