GENERAL PURPOSE HAND CERTIFICATE I TRAINING COURSE
MAR10313 - Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal).
The Australian General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate I in Marine Operations qualification will enable you to work as a deckhand on Australian Registered commercial or private vessels.
The General Purpose Hand is the minimum required certification to work on an Australian commercial vessel over 12m long. A General Purpose Hand works on deck or in the engine room of vessels less than 80m long and propulsion power less than 3000 kW operating within the Australian EEZ (200 nm).
The General Purpose Hand qualification is required by Roads and Maritime Services and National legislation. Without this certification, you may not legally work onboard Australian registered commercial vessels over 12m in length.
Australian and International Dual Qualifications -
Students who wish to qualify for the General Purpose Hand certification must complete a training program with an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO) equal or equivalent to a Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal).
After you complete the STCW 95+10 / basic safety course and the IYT Deckhand training course you will be eligible for the NSW Roads and Maritime Services General Purpose Hand Certificate of Competency.
By completing the General Purpose Hand Course with the Sydney Maritime Institute (a division of the Superyacht Crew Academy) you will obtain Australian and International certifications with a single course program.
Both the STCW 95+10 and the IYT Megayacht Deck Crew course are recognised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) of the UK. The MCA are the governing body for the majority of the Superyachts worldwide. This means if you wish to work on foreign flagged superyachts in the Mediterranean, Caribbean or anywhere in the world, you qualifications would be recognised.
The modules you will complete during the course can be used as advanced standings in higher qualification courses such as those required for the Coxswain II, Master up to 24m Near Coastal (Master V).
The qualifications are valid for 5 years. If you work internationally for a few seasons and then wish to return to Australia and continue in the maritime industry, your qualifications completed at the Sydney Maritime Institute will still be valid.
