MAR10318 – Certificate I in Maritime Operations

(General Purpose Hand Near Coastal).

The Australian General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate I in Marine Operations qualification will enable you to work as a deckhand on Australian Registered commercial or private vessels.

The General Purpose Hand is the minimum required certification to work on an Australian commercial vessel over 12m long. A General Purpose Hand works on deck or in the engine room of vessels less than 80m long and propulsion power less than 3000 kW operating within the Australian EEZ (200 nm).

The General Purpose Hand qualification is required by Roads and Maritime Services and National legislation. Without this certification, you may not legally work onboard Australian registered commercial vessels over 12m in length.

 

Requirements for the issue of the final AMSA Certificate of Competency (General Purpose Hand NC):

  • MAR10318 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) (provided at the successful completion of the course);
  • Successfully pass the AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment – AMPA (included as part of the course). Not required for AMSA COC application, however still provided.
  • HLTAID003 statement of attainment Provide first aid
  • Eyesight Test Certificate;
  • Self declaration of medical fitness (completed on AMSA426 COC application form)
  • 16 years old.

There are a total of 8 units of competency for MAR10318 - Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal).

When you have successfully completed the 8 units of competency and met the requirements as set by AMSA you will be eligible to lodge your Certificate of Competency application to AMSA for the General Purpose Hand NC COC.

Operational Quality and Safety

MARF027 – Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment

MARF028 – Follow procedures to minimize and fight fires on board a vessel

MARF029 – Meet work health and safety Requirements

MARF030 – Survive at sea using survival craft

HLTAID003 – Provide first aid

Onwater practical with classroom theory

MARB001- Assist with routine maintenance of a vessel

MARG001- Work effectively as part of a crew on a vessel up to 80 metres

MARN001- Apply general purpose hand skills aboard a vessel

MARO001- Perform basic lookout duties

Course Duration

The course is 14 days (2.5 weeks) in total and is reflected in the following order

  • Week 1: Monday-Saturday
  • Week 2: Monday-Friday
  • Week 3: Monday-Wednesday

Students who have already completed the Shipboard Safety skill set will be given credit transfer for the following units and will be exempt from Week 1 of the course.

  • MARF027 - Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
  • MARF028 - Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
  • MARF029 - Meet work health and safety requirements
  • MARF030 - Survive at sea using survival craft

Training Location
