The AMSA Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) is the internationally & nationally recognised STCW Basic Safety qualification required to work on commercial vessels in Australia and worldwide.
Whether you want to work on Superyachts, cruise ships, commercial vessels, offshore support vessels or passenger vessels, this is the mandatory safety course employers ask for.

What Is AMSA CoST?
The Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) meets the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW)requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and administered in Australia by AMSA.
It provides the essential emergency and survival skills every crew member must have before working at sea.
You’ll learn how to:

Work safely with others onboard

It is the minimum safety requirement for most maritime jobs worldwide.
Units of Competency (Statement of Attainment)
Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following nationally recognised units:

HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
-
MARF035 – Contribute to fire prevention and firefighting (basic firefighting)
-
MARF037 – Follow vessel security procedures
-
MARF041 – Observe personal safety and social responsibility
-
MARF046 – Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment
These units make up the MARSS00033 Safety Training Certification Skill Set (CoST).

Course Duration
Total training time: 48.5 hours including online learning and practical sessions.
Courses typically run over 8 days.
Pre - Enrolment Requirements
Candidates are expected to have a certain level of skills and knowledge prior to enrolling in this course. We do recommend equivalent proficiency in maths and English to a year 10 level. Each student is required to undertake a prescribed Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LLN). Candidates are subject to an initial skills assessment upon course commencement and criteria for enrolment with Sydney Maritime Institute is:

Prior Training and Experience
Contact us to arrange a telephone interview to assess your prior training and experience as you may be eligible for Credit Transfer and/or Recognition of Prior Learning. If you wish to proceed with the process of recognition of prior learning, you will be required to present the required documentation for review.

The main features of the Coxswain Near Coastal training Course
There are a total of 13 units of competency for MAR20324 - Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal).
When you have successfully completed the 13 units of competency, completed the AMPA, met the requirements and accrued the sea service you will be eligible to lodge your Certificate of Competency application to AMSA for the Coxswain Grade 1 NC COC.
Course Delivery
Online & In Classroom
This course is delivered through a blend of online theory and hands-on practical training. For the online learning we use a LMS called aXcelerate which allows students to have an online learning portal and track course completion.
Entry Requirements
To enrol, students must:
-
Be 16 years or older
-
Have basic English language skills
-
Be physically capable of participating in swimming and firefighting activities
-
Provide photo ID and a USI
-
Complete a short LLND assessment before enrolment
No prior maritime experience is required.
What Certificates You Receive?
When you complete the Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) with Superyacht Crew Academy, you receive two important documents, each serving a different purpose.
1. Statement of Completion (STCW Modules)
After finishing all practical and online training, you will receive a Statement of Completion confirming you have successfully completed the STCW basic safety modules.
This document:

Is recognised internationally as evidence of STCW basic safety training
-
Can be used when applying for jobs on vessels overseas
-
Provides proof to employers that you have completed the required STCW safety training
This can be used while you are waiting for your official AMSA certificate, or if you are planning to work internationally.
2. Statement of Attainment (National Units)
You will also receive a Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised units of competency that make up the MARSS00033 Safety Training Certification Skill Set (CoST).
These units include:

This is your official Australian vocational education record showing you have met the required competency standards. This is what you take to apply to AMSA to get a CoST card.
Apply For AMSA Certificate of Safety Training (CoST Card)
The official AMSA Certificate of Safety Training is issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)after you submit an application and pay the AMSA processing fee.
This certificate is required to work legally on commercial vessels in Australia. Your Statement of Attainment is used as evidence when applying. Once approved, AMSA issues your CoST certificate card.
Superyacht Crew Academy can guide you through the AMSA application process.
You will need to lodge a formal application using the Seafarer form 419 to be assessed towards the requirements for a COST.
Lodge from within Australia
You will need to fill out the Seafarer form 419, attach all required supporting documents and lodge it at a participating Australia Post retail outlet.
You will need to pay the fees for your application at the post office at the time of lodgement. The fee will include the cost of the colour passport photograph.
Lodge from overseas
You will need to fill out the Seafarer form 419, attach all required supporting documents including a colour passport-style photograph and send the paperwork to us by email to STCW.applications@amsa.gov.au When we receive your email we will let you know how to pay the fee for your application via AMSA online portal.

Training Location
The course is run from our Office in Unit 5a/4 Skyline Place, Frenchs Forest, NSW, 2086, Australia. The facilities are a 25 min drive North of Sydney’s CBD.
