Government Investment in the Future Maritime Workforce

Since the program’s launch, more than 651 apprentices and trainees have already started their careers across NSW, with an impressive 94% retention rate.The initiative is backed by a $93.5 million investment, showing the government’s strong commitment to helping young people and career-changers secure stable, meaningful work.

For the final round, 432 new positions are being offered across 73 government agencies, including key maritime employers such as the Port Authority of NSW.

Breaking Barriers in the Maritime Industry

The maritime sector has long been under-represented by women, with only 5% of Australia’s seafarers identifying as female.This program is changing that — opening doors for women and regional candidates to access structured training, hands-on experience, and industry mentorship.

Port Authority of NSW trainee Morgan Johnson shares:

“The program is breaking down barriers to entry by intentionally creating space for women to step into traditionally male-dominated industries they’re passionate about.”

Another trainee, Summer Creely, highlights the importance of accessible training:

“Living in a regional area like the South Coast made it challenging to access the kind of industry experience needed to grow a maritime career — until I joined this traineeship.”
